Screw the updates, I have money!

Or at least I will when my paycheques come in.

Yeah, I haven't updated my journal in a while (over five months). Quite a bit has happened. My second year of uni is over and I passed fairly well, but I need to pull my marks up a bit next year to get a 2:1. I've chosen my dissertation topic; I'm looking at "The use of Language as an instrument of oppression and rebellion in modern/20th Century dystopian fiction". On the performance side of things, I got another chance to solo in the Fortune Player's "Showstoppers" musical evening. I sang "Stars and the Moon" from Songs for a New World. Fun night.

I also got a new job. I was fine with my old one but Welcome Break decided to transfer me over to the new Waitrose they opened. I do miss the Forecourt but I definately prefer selling awesome food to selling petrol. I think I'm spending half my wages in there. I'm also doing a tonne of overtime at the moment, so I'll have lots of money to spend on dystopian novels for my dissertation and anime box sets.

I also discovered the brilliance that is Abridged Series. My favourites have to be Dragonball Z Abridged, Alternate Reality Dragonball Z, Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged and Yu Yu Hakusho Abridged. Check them out on YouTube if you haven't already

I also got to see the Gondoliers. It was awesome. Brilliant job on the singing Nissa.

Both boring and spectacular at the same time

I've had my job at the Welcome Break Forecourt for over a year now, and it seems to me that Saturdays are a lot less busy than they used to be. Today was a good example. A ten-hour shift and I felt like I was watching paint dry. Except for two incidents. The first was the most spectacular; our entire system crashed and we couldn't charge people for their fuel or switch the pumps on, so a huge queue formed and we had to charge everyone manually then sit around and do nothing until it was fixed. I ended up going out and apologising to people just to have something to do. The second was an arguement about store policy with an angry customer.

I've been trying to draw a lot more recently, it's mostly been original work because it's easier to find inspiration for it.

This has been going round, so as a gamer I thought I'd join in. Feel free to do it in your journal as well

1.What was the first video game you have ever played?
Busytown on the PC, back in the days of MS DOS. I still blame my parents for starting my love of video games and computers in general

2. What was your first console?
Well technically the PC, I played computer games for years before I got my PS2

3. Have you ever visited a video game arcade?
Yes. I've played dancemat games and time crisis (or its equivalent) in bowling alleys and similar arcades.

4. What was your first handheld?
Nintendo DS

5. What was the first game you've beaten/cleared completely?
It's hard to say. Probably the PC version of the first Harry Potter game. I spent multiple playthroughs getting all the cards. These days I generally don't go for 100 percent unless I think it's worth it. Final Fantasy X and Kingdom Hearts II are the games I've done the most for.

6. Games based off of real sports: Yay or Nay?
Nay. I'm not a fan of sport in the real world, and it carries over to the gaming world

7. Online games: Yay or nay?
Nay. I've never really enjoyed them.

8. Do you play any Massively Multiplayer Online RPG games? (MMORPGs?)
No. I've thought about trying FFXI before, but I don't want to get sucked into something I have to pay money for.

9. Do you play any virtual pet games? (Neopets, Teripets, Aftermathzone, etc.)
I used to play Petz when I was younger, and I played Neopets for a while but not anymore.

10. Puzzle games and Strategy games: Yay or Nay?
Yeah, got nothing against them although I can't say I've played many.

11. Do you play any RPGs?
Yes. It's my favourite genre

12. Do you play any Platformer games?
I played Super Mario Bros on DS but never finished it, and I really like the Ratchet and Clank series

13. What was the first game/console/handheld of yours that stopped working?
The PS2 I share with my siblings. It never broke as such, but it's a pretty feeble thing. It needs dusting out several times a year, and must have something in the disk tray at all times or it jams shut.

Characters/Plot

14. Do you actually care if a game has a plot or do you just play games for the gameplay?
Provided at least one of these aspects is good, I'll probably keep playing the game. If a game has a bad story and bad gameplay I'll probably give up.

15. Name a few video game characters that are your favorites.
Tidus(FFX), Squall(FFVIII), Paul (FFII), Freya (FFIX), Balthier (FFXII), Terra (FFVI), Sora (KH), Rufus (VP2), Ratchet (RaC), Zack (CCFFVII)

16. Name a few series that are your favorites.
Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Ratchet and Clank

17. Has a video game ever made you cry?
Only three games I've played have had endings that brought me to tears; Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy VIII and Crisis Core. FFIX almost had be but not quite.

18. Has a video game character annoyed you so much that you wanted him removed from the game?
Brother from FFX-2 comes to mind here...

19. Do you "pair" or "ship" characters up with one another? (make/create/write romance involving them)
I tend to support most of the canon and implied couples in games, but I don't tend to make them up

20. Do you write video game fanfiction?
I've tried a few times, but failed.

21. Do you draw video game fanart?
Yes, but I don't like just drawing stuff, there has to be a meaning behind it (generally illustrating a favourite scene or a thought I've had)

22. Do you come up with theories on how a character came to be/what he or she would do in a situation/why he or she is moody/etc.
I have often thought about characters' pasts and what they would have done at certain points in their life, but these mostly stay in my head.

23. Are you a "fanboy" or "fangirl" of any character?
Not really.

Boss Battles/Villains

24. Hardest Boss Battle
I should probably say ExDeath in FFV since I never actually beat him. Others include Ultimecia from FFVIII, Xemnas from KHII and Drek from RaC

25. Most Frustrating Boss Battle
Probably Drek from RaC because I kept dying by missing with the swingshot, and had to keep stopping to buy more ammo for my gun during the fight.

26. Most Rewarding Boss Battle
Ultimecia I guess because it was so satisfying to finally win, plus I loved the ending.

27. Funnest Boss Battle
Seymour Omnis, just because it had cool music and I laughed at the fact that I absorbed most of his magic.

28. Most Boring Boss Battle
Emperor Palmecia from FFII. I didn't really do much, just kept fighting.

29. Boss Battle that dragged out for a long, long time
Safer Sephiroth. After the seventeenth Supernova I got a little fed up

30. Boss Battle with the coolest music
Ultimecia-Griever, with Maybe I'm a Lion

31. Most Surprising Boss Battle
Even though I could tell he was bad news, having to fight Seymor (but what was more surprising was how tough he was)

32. What's your all time favorite villain?
Kuja. I did like Nefarious though, he was funny. I also like Thugs 4 Less in RaC2

33. What's your all time least favorite villain?
Yu Yevon. He was such a letdown. There was so much potential for him with his strange ideals about preserving his hometown and he ended up being a floating beetle.

34. Do you ever feel sorry for the villains?
I guess both Kuja and Sephiroth. They had pretty messed up lives

35. Are there any villains that seem like they should be playing for the good guys, but aren't?
General Leo in FFVI. I really wanted him to join my side. I was really sad when you-know-what happened

36. Most malicious villain?
Kefka. He was a madman. Anyone who kills people by poisoning their water supply definitely deserves that title

37. Most surprising villain?
Kain in FFIV. I was all releaved that he was alive and had shown up to help me, and he goes and tries to kill me.

Favorites (Didn't we already do that? x3)

38. What is your all-time favorite 2D Game?
Final Fantasy IV. My all-time favourite game from the sprite era

39. What's your favorite 3D game? (PS1/N64 generation)
Final Fantasy IX I guess. It was a really good all-rounder of a game

40. What's your favorite arcade game?
Time Crisis

41. What's your favorite next-gen game? (Gamecube/PS2/X-Box)
Final Fantasy X

42. Sequels/long series: Yay or nay?
Only if they stay good. All the Ratchet sequels I've played have been really good, but FFXII was a real letdown

43. What's your favorite Online Game?
None

44. What's your favorite console?
Playstation 2

45.What's your favorite handheld?
Nintendo DS

46. Have you ever got yourself involved in a "console war"? (arguing that a console is better than another console)
Not really, most other gamers I know share my opinions on consoles

47. Have you ever defended a character/game/console you liked in an argument? Which one?
I always assert that I like something, but generally agree with whatever is being criticised.

48. Name a game that you like but everyone else seems to hate.
Final Fantasy II. The most underappreciated game in the history of the series

49. Name a character that you like but everyone else seems to hate.
Tidus. I really reallt liked him,. I thought he was a well rounded character with a lot of depth, but everyone else seems to hate him for being whiny.

50. Name a game that you hate but everyone else seems to like.
Not hate, but I think that the first Final Fantasy isn't that great. Everyone says it's epic and amazing but as a game itself it's a tad boring.

51. Name a character that you hate but everyone else seems to love.
I'm sure there has been. The fanbase has let me down so many times.

Miscellaneous

52. Have you ever stopped before you finished a game because it was too frustrating to go on?
Futurama. The most badly written game in history. Only ever worth it for the cutscene

53. Will you stop at NOTHING to get 100% in a video game?
Dosen't really bother me unless there's storyline in it

54. Have you ever injured yourself at a video game? (Space Invader wrist and Mario Party 1 blister victims may answer yes)
First game on PS2 I played (DBZ Budokai) gave me serious wrist ache

55. Has a horror/survival genre video game scared you to the point that you refused to finish the game? Did you get nightmares from said game?
No, but the only one I've played is Resi 4 and I stopped playing because I got stuck and then had to go back to Oxford. My general reaction to fear is to laugh though.

56. Have you ever thrown a controller/disc/cartridge in a fit of frustration?
No, but I've yanked them out of the console by mistake. I've also given myself a headache over games before, but I generally take that as a sign to stop playing

57. Do you need to blow/clean certain games to get them to play?
The aforementioned PS2 needs blasting with compressed air several times a year.

58. Have you ever played a game for so long that you missed sleep over it?
I've stayed up playing DS more than once, but never pulled an all-nighter

59. Were you ever involved in the Pokemon craze?
Nope. And proud of it

60. Last but not least: Do you picture yourself playing video games 10, 20, or 30 years from now?
I'd say yes. I can't see my love of games dying, and I hope I still have time to play them when I'm older but I've changed so much over the years it's hard to say

Time is definately not on my side right now. The weeks are flying by rapidly, and it feels like I only just got back to Oxford. December is fast approaching, which means soon I'll have to say farewell to my teenage years. Ah well, I guess 20 isn't the worst age I'll turn.

Uni's been pretty good so far. I'm doing reasonably in my coursework, work's been going well, the house is good. I also auditioned for the Fortune Players' "Little Shop of Horrors" and while I didn't get a part, I'm still really looking foward to rehersals. In the meantime I'm singing "I'm Not That Girl" from Wicked for their christmas West End Orgy.

I'm trying to draw more often, I've done quite a bit of sketchwork, and as you can see I've managed to post a few things. It'll mostly be original work though, since I currently have no inspiration for Fanart (I don't draw it to me popular, I have to have a specific thought or idea in my head)

Less than a month to go

This year has gone far too quickly. It seems like I only just moved into halls, and I'm moving out at the start of June. My last exam is on the 12th May, and once they're over I'm going to work at Welcome Break until my halls contract expires. I'm gonna be sad to leave, but the 3.30am fire alarm this morning is making me think otherwise

Since I haven't posted here in ages, I'll list a few updates on what I've been doing this term.

Firstly, the house is signed for and sorted, and I should be moving in 4th September. Till then it's back to Windsor for the summer. In April I performed in a production of "The Wiz" with the uni's musical theatre society, The Fortune Players. My parts included munchkin, crow, kalidah, Emerald city citezen and winkie. The show was amazing, and I'm definately re-joining next year. After the show, we performed a "West End Orgy"; a collection of songs from Broadway/West End musicals. I sang "Another Open'in" from Kiss me Kate and "The Internet is for Porn" from Avenue Q. I was kinda talked into doing that one, but it was amusing. My exams are fast approaching, so that's my main concern right now. I have one for Reading Narrative and one for Critical issues, and they both carry a lot of marks so I need to do well.
